BIO 361 - Biology of Microorganisms

survey course is aimed primarily at students interested in the life sciences, including biology, biochemistry, medical fields (pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-vet, pre-pharmacy, pre-physician’s assistant, pre-optometry), biotechnology, and environmental sciences. Topics include microbial classification, morphology, growth, reproduction, metabolism, and genetics. Students will examine interactions between humans and microorganisms, including infectious diseases, biotech applications, applied and industrial microbiology, and environmental microbiology. In the laboratory, students will learn how to isolate, culture, and identify bacteria. They will investigate such phenomena as microbial fermentation, antibiotic resistance, transformation, disinfection, water and food safety testing, and bacteriophages.

Prerequisite: BIO 111 /BIO 115  and BIO 112 /BIO 116 
Corequisite: CHE 211  or permission of instructor
